That’s a great question, anon! Thank you for asking.
I think, for me, this comes down to phrasing. I do not think Katniss was forced to love Peeta, as in I don’t think she realized it consciously. I think Katniss was GROOMED to love Peeta over an extended period of time. It seems often forgotten just how young she was when she was set on this path to marry him, when her life started depending on making people believe she loved him. When you’re sixteen, you are incredibly impressionable, very easily mislead. People say “Oh Katniss was so stubborn, she could never be talked into something she didn’t want to do.” But that simply isn’t the case. Sure, she was stubborn and had a hell of a head on her shoulders most of the time but the fact remains…She was barely older than a child. Tack onto this that Peeta is charming and persuasive and manipulative.
It’s hard to say when she loved him. I think a lot of the younger side of fandom perhaps mistakes sexual attraction for love. She’s certainly attracted to him midway through Catching Fire but still…they don’t really know each other. Not to throw ships into it, but she doesn’t know or understand him the way she knows Gale. Which I think is how you need to know someone before you can without prejudice say you LOVE someone. You need that base. She absolutely cares for him. But again, caring for someone and being in love with someone…not the same thing.
Her ending saddens me. I do believe she eventually loved Peeta. But I think, because of previously mentioned grooming and ideas implanted in her head at such an age/terrifying time, she really didn’t have a choice. It was the path she was set on, so it was the path she stayed on. I think so many fans read the ending and think it’s a fairytale romance and I think that’s completely inaccurate. She is married to a man that I don’t think really ever understood her, she is the burnt out version of a media symbol, and she lost the few people who kept her who she was before all of that was thrust on her.
All just my opinions of course :)
groomed is the word i’ve been looking for thank you. thank YOU
